Spectacular Pair Flavio POLI SEGUSO MURANO Crystal Glass Fish Sculptures (Love Fish?)
If these magnificent silver-flecked Murano sommerso glass fish look familiar, it's because they have their design roots with Favio Poli and Archimede Seguso (Seguso Vetri D'Arte circa 1937). Later, Seguso modified the design for his own Luxardo Murano animal decanters and stand-alone glass sculptures (see example at https://www.etsy.com/listing/575957052/c1950s-archimede-seguso-murano-orange?ga_search_query=seguso%2Bfish&ref=shop_items_search_12&pro=1&frs=1Here). Here, in comparison, our Murano fish have shortened bodies and longer and more curvaceous tails; enough of a difference to question whether these pieces were in fact produced by Seguso at all. I've never found another example, either with label or without. The quality and workmanship are undeniable... Note the exquisitely formed silver-flecked inner body encased in thick sparkling crystallo.
If indeed our maritime beauties were produced by Archimede Seguso, they would likely be later issue--maybe 1980s--given their generally pristine condition and lack of significant base wear. But I'm also wondering whether this is yet another of Formia's modern day reinterpretations of Flavio Poli's original work--many of their pieces employed silver/mica flecks. Regardless of maker, these sculptures are of extremely high quality Murano glass and damn--they are GORGEOUS!
