Though unsigned, this crazy-big crazy-magnificent to-die-for Murano sommerso glass 'perfume' bottle SCREAMS Luigi Onesto/Oball Glass, both in design and familiar purple (plum), pink, light blue color scheme. Standing over 12" tall, 8.5" wide and 6" thick, this marvelous beauty weighs in at OVER 18 POUNDS. Many of Oball's most popular designs have been produced periodically since the company's founding in 1982, making definitive dating impossible. However, when it comes to these super-sized perfume bottles, it's all about outrageous scale and Oball craftmanship. I've seen little variation in secondary market sales prices between the older and newer supersized Oball pieces except to the extent an older design isn't as frequently available. Also, of course (and this is a universal truth in the Murano glass market at large), new Oball glass sells for at least twice as in the secondary (used/vintage) market. (BTW--NEVER BUY MURANO GLASS NEW as it depreciates massively the second you drive it off the lot.)
So, with all the Chinese glass flooding the Murano glass market, is there any chance that our unsigned decanter is, in fact, a Murano fraud? Nah. While Chinese glass blowers have gotten much better over the years at producing sommerso glass and many smaller pieces (notably by Fifth Avenue Crystal) get wrongly attributed to Luigi Onesto all the time, I've yet to see any perfume bottles near this size on offer from China. Fornace Mian, the successor firm to Formia, which went bankrupt a couple of years ago, IS producing a few monster-sized sommerso perfume bottles and vases these days. However, the shapes and colors aren't likely to be mistaken for Oball's.
