Feast your eyes on this uncommon but documented* (and labeled!) pair of mid-century Murano birds (ducks, geese, water fowl) by the master, Archimede Seguso. Notice how the colors meld perfectly into one another in a seamless blur? That's the "sfumato" technique and one sure way to tell true Murano craftsmanship from the hordes of China-made imitations that in fact make up the largest part of the Murano glass inventory online. (Search "Murano birds" on alibaba.com and you'll quickly see how China-based glassblowers have come nowhere near to being able to pull off sfumato!) Of course, Archimede Seguso wasn't just known for his ground-breaking advances in the alchemy of glass, technique, and craftmanship, but also, for his playful, fanciful, even comical animal figurines. For example, these beauties sure aren't love birds -- they appear to be pecking around for food and completely indifferent to each other.
The label on each of the bases leaves no doubt as to the Seguso attribution, even if the style and sheer attitude of these birds weren't already a dead give-away.
