HUGE 18" ELIO RAFFAELI Murano Sommerso | Submerged Glass Swan Bird Statue | Figurine
Murano firms have always borrowed each other's designs, designers, and craftsmen freely, and I've seen this swoonworthy swan design marketed with either Livio Seguso (not of Archimede Seguso lineage but rather a maestro who began work under Barbini and then designed for Salviati before starting his own enterprise) or Formia stickers. Elio Raffaeli, another Murano maestro who worked with Livio Seguso before starting his own shop (ARS Murano) also designed for other firms (Formia, Oggetti, Livio Seguso). Given that I've only seen our swan in this to-die-for cranberry pink with Formia labels (and, also signed by Raffaeli), Formia is my best guess.
More importantly than the Livio Seguso vs. Formia question (both have been producing exquisite pieces since the 1960s) is the unquestionable fact that this piece bears the artistry of MURANO. The internet is stewn with Chinese fakes--China-made figurines are even being advertised as Murano on sites purportedly run by experts, e.g. 1stDibbs. Experienced collectors can tell a Chinese fake murano figurine by the complexity, craftmanship, and form of the piece. Chinese 'murano' animal figurines look awkward--garish colors, clubbed rather than graceful lines, and childish facial detail.
