Behold this circa 1920 five-spouted glass optic vase with rigarees designed by Vittorio Zecchin for Venini's predecessor firm, Cappellin Venini & Co., in all its delicate perfection. Notice the fine optic ribs and graceful sweep of the spouts' arms.
This piece is documented in both Murano Magic and Leslie Pina's Italian Glass, and our vase design and proportions appears to be an identical match for the amber ones photographed. Yet, Gordiola, a Spanish firm who has produced copies of this piece, has caused some confusion in the marketplace. The Cappellin Soffiato vases are very light, delicate and finely crafted; The Gordiola are thicker, heavier, and generally larger. Moreover, the Cappellin Soffiato vases of the 1920s are paler--even if only because the glass is much thinner. The pale pink of our speciman here is the same rose color used on Cappellin production around that time. Some of the Gordiola speciman's I've seen have a rough pontil, while ours has been fired smooth.
This precious beauty is in surprisingly fine shape for its nearly 100 years. There is the expected wear to the base plus four tiny indentations/gouges that I've seen on other pieces of the same design and clearly originiate from the manufacturing process. There is no staining or discoloration on this beauty whatsoever.
